While the comparison is flattering, it is somewhat reductive as the Norwegian Vocal Jazz star stands out in many ways.
Not only does she have one of the most recognizable Soul/Folk/Blues vocal signatures, but also a true songwriting talent praised by critics, not to mention the numerous awards collected in Europe throughout her 15-year career (3 German Jazz Awards in Germany, the Amadeus Music Award in Austria, the Austrian Grammy…).
On "Things You Leave Behind," her first album on the OKeh/Sony label, Rebekka Bakken writes a new chapter in her career and her life by offering 11 electrifying songs infused with her Blues, Folk, Jazz, and Soul influences, like the first single "Closer."
Except for two covers, including the moving, melancholic, and soulful "Time After Time" by Cyndi Lauper, all the songs on the album are original compositions by Rebekka.
With its straightforward lyrics and catchy melodies, "Things You Leave Behind" turns out to be the unvarnished self-portrait of a woman who knows exactly what she wants and of a multifaceted artist who is as enchanting as she is captivating.
