Edition 40ème Anniversaire Orfeo : Les enregistrements de légende

Description

We would have liked to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the legendary Munich label Orféo with a box set featuring these "ultimate recordings" (as indicated on the cover) rather than this mid-price digest and two discs offering separate pieces from symphonies and sonatas, completely decontextualized from their source and entirety. The booklet only provides a brief overview of the label's history and a list of tracks including the composer, title, performer, and date (from 1951 to 2017). That's all. However, there are some great names on the bill: Klemperer, Sawallisch, Furtwängler, Kubelík, and Kleiber, but listening to Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Wagner, etc., in a fragment of a work doesn't offer much to the listener unless they are in their car contemplating the road (might as well turn on the radio). The same goes for the barely two minutes that make up the Prelude of Bach's first Partita under the fingers of a rare pianist, Carl Seeman, a 1965 recording that passes as quickly as an espresso and leaves a bitter taste, followed by Oleg Maisenberg in the Andante of Schubert's 14th sonata (rather dull) and Saint-Saëns with his Swan, played here by the Pergamenschikov/Gillov duo. A real mishmash. We will compensate for our disappointment by listening to very discreet gems scattered here and there in this unworthy program: Debussy by Konstantin Lifschitz (Epigraphe antique No. 1), Baiba Skride and her sister in a Romance by Sibelius, and the opportunity in the second disc to enjoy these "legendary voices" that have contributed to the prestige of the label: Popp, Lipovšek, Gruberova, Bumbry (Adrianna Lecouvreur), Baltsa (La Donna del Lago). More unexpectedly: Jessye Norman in Alceste, and Brigitte Fassbaender in Bizet (!), the formidable Krassimira Stoyanova singing to the Moon (Rusalka), and especially the very beautiful duet "Lass für ihn" from Sphor's Jessonda, divinely interpreted by Julia Varady and Renate Behle. A double album worth the detour... if not for the box set. (Jérôme Angouillant)
