"Distant Populations," which is only the fourth full-length album in Quicksand's career, is a relatively quick follow-up to their last album, "Interiors," which was released 22 years after its predecessor, 1995's "Manic Compression." Critically acclaimed, "Interiors" successfully re-established the band as the powerful, contemporary entity they always were. "Distant Populations" has a more percussive and rhythmic sound than its predecessor; its 11 songs are concise, finely crafted sonic gems, with no wasted notes; and its raw power and striking lyricism are evident from the first listen. It is a remarkable step forward for the band.
