PRINCE FAR I “Under Heavy Manners” Prince Far I, born Michael James Williams in 1944 or 1945 in Spanish Town, Jamaica, and murdered on September 15, 1983, was a Jamaican reggae and dub toaster and producer. His low, gravelly timbre and his way of speaking over the music make him a unique and easily recognizable voice. A committed Rasta, his lyrics are imbued with values of peace and tolerance. He is also considered one of the founding fathers of dub poetry. Before becoming one of the greatest toasters reggae has ever known, Prince Far I first held a security guard position at Joe Gibbs’ studio and worked as a bouncer for Coxsone at Studio One while also being the deejay for Sir Mike the Musical Dragon Sound System, then in the early 1970s he became involved in Jamaican music under the name King Cry Cry (a name he owed to a tendency to sob when he got angry), influenced by the deejays he met in the dancehalls of the Waterhouse district in Kingston, where he now lived. During the second half of the seventies, very few managed to imitate the success of Joe Gibbs and Errol Thompson’s productions. “The Mighty Two” took Kingston’s greatest musical and technical innovations and turned the cutting edge into a commercial proposition that spread across the rest of the world. “Under Heavy Manners” was an essential purchase as well as a defining statement on the dark mood of the era of the year when two seven clash and forty years after its original release, the raw reality of “Under Heavy Manners” continues to hit home. Complete remastering for this 2nd album released in 1977 Under Heavy Manners, produced by the producer-engineer duo Joe Gibbs and Errol Thompson, saw the arrival of its first big hit, Heavy Manners, on Naggo Morris’s riddim, Su Su Pon Rasta, marked by a heavy bass; in this song, he asks the people to self-discipline and criticizes the PNP’s anti-crime policy, which rastas suffered from.
