Powerplant's debut album, People in the Sun, experienced a meteoric rise on the Internet in 2019, thanks to a viral YouTube video released by Harakiri Diat that attracted tens of thousands of listeners. Its playful artwork, featuring a smiling face, actually concealed 30 minutes of captivating and infectious synth punk, straddling the line between Gary Numan and amateur DIY. Tracks like "Dungen" deeply resonated with audiences through their nostalgic vulnerability, allowing the album to accumulate over two million streams on Spotify and gain cult status in the underground punk scene of the late 2010s. Since 2019, Powerplant has evolved into a full band, with Zhykharyev now joined by members of the London noise-punk and experimental scene: Karim Newble (Hitmen, Island of Love), Cajm (Jeshi, John Glacier), and Lloyd Clipston (Arms Race, Second Death).
