Portugal. The Man had been a band for just over two years and during that time, they had already released three albums, one EP, and a few singles. In the same period, they had also played about 500 concerts. This young band from Alaska was riding a creative wave rarely associated with such a strong work ethic. Alaskans are tough people, and this band was even tougher. They finished their tour in December 2008 and instead of taking a well-deserved break, they decided to record the highlight of what their live performance had become. They found a studio in the suburbs of Portland, Oregon, a true gem. They crammed into the studio with all their stage equipment and a handful of friends with handheld cameras. Longtime collaborator and filmmaker Graham (Baclagon) Agcaolli, and engineer/mixer Jacob Portrait (who would later join Unknown Mortal Orchestra) helped document these sessions. 2021. The band hasn't toured in over a year, by far the longest break without concerts since their beginnings, and the moment seemed right. Here are the Oregon City Sessions, drawn from the archives. Unchanged since the day it was completed. It's a time capsule of a band finding its way. A snapshot of raw young talent before they won awards, sold millions of records, and headlined festivals. Just a few kids from Alaska wanting to travel the world and play music.
