We each have our own ideas of what it means to live in a state of perpetual terror, of a world slowly burning, and of overwhelming darkness. In the case of Portrayal of Guilt, their torturous afterlife is accompanied by grief, loss, masochism, suffering, and pain. On *Christside*, their third album and the second in 2021, Portrayal of Guilt plunges headfirst into unfathomable depths, creating a powerfully unsettling work of art. For guitarist and vocalist Matt King, this record was partly like composing a horror film soundtrack. The band aimed to create an atmosphere of anxiety and fear. The entirety of *Christside* unfolds across relentless, nihilistic, and screaming soundscapes crafted by Matt King, drummer James Beveridge, and bassist Alex Stanfield. Each track tells a story within the darkest possible setting that the listener can freely interpret and explore. Beginning with the unsettling "The Sixth Circle," where King's screams are heard over hypnotic guitar motifs and a muffled beat, the band eventually erupts in a tyrannical explosion, further immersing you in its oppressive power. On "Bed of Ash," the band delves into new depths while exploring the mechanical groans of an industrial rhythm section. On "...where the suffering never ends," agitated and macabre instruments serve as the backdrop for a story depicting a brutal death. Recorded at Strange Weather and Circular Ruin studios in Brooklyn with Ben Greenberg, *Christside* features vocal contributions from Jenna Rose of the New York darkwave band Anatomy (on "Sadist") and Jeremy Bolm, vocalist of Touché Amoré (on "Fall From Grace").
