Gildas Lemardelé and Gwendal Demeslay, the duo behind Portier Dean, began by composing and playing folk music. Their first EP was released in 2014. A year later, with their second EP, Made of Earth, Portier Dean enriched their sound, which became more rhythmic and electric. For two years, the band performed numerous concerts in France and toured Germany for a week. They played at the Beauregard festival, appeared at Printemps de Bourges, and opened for artists like Moriarty, Keren Ann, Elvis Perkins, Evening Hymns, and Shake Shake Go.
Concurrently, Portier Dean continued to compose, creating direct, pop-rock tracks that blended softness and energy. The duo embraced serendipity, allowing themselves to be led by sounds that emerged from their songwriting, whether hip-hop, electro, or post-rock. These experiments culminated in the album Ancient Majesty. The album's tracks are like modest temples built in homage to love, hope, nature, and music. The songs on Ancient Majesty, like invocations, play on the trance of keyboard loops and the energy of percussion. They employ the sensuality of gospel, the roundness of a piano… They convey a simple, organic fervor carried by embodied and choral voices.
