Formed in Trondheim in 2016, the quartet consists of Ragnhild Fangel, Martin Miguel Tonne, Ola Djupvik, and Jonas Krøvel. Since their inception, they have released two critically acclaimed albums and mesmerizing live performances, solidifying their status as one of Norway's most exciting musical exports.Their third album, Champion, showcases their dynamic soundscapes, characterized by energetic rhythms, intricate guitar work, and Fangel's distinctive vocals, which have garnered widespread acclaim. With influences ranging from art-rock to jazz, Pom Poko's music defies genre boundaries, offering a fresh and innovative sonic experience. About the album, the band stated... "This record is a kind of experiment to see what happens when the four members of Pom Poko make music without any input from the world around them, from the first idea for a song until the last note is recorded. This time, we recorded and produced absolutely everything ourselves, a process that proved surprisingly comfortable. With this album, we almost unconsciously stumbled upon the fact that the songs needed more space and less fuss in the production than what we had been drawn to before. The songs are also a bit more concise and focused on this album, perhaps because the lyrics tell more or less understandable stories—about connections, relationships, bizarre situations, hopes, and dreams. So, this is the first time we've sent music abroad to be mixed, specifically to mixer and producer Ali Chant in Bristol. His clear and direct style perfectly suits the music and brings out the songs as they are, without unnecessary embellishment. Overall, this is our most mature album to date, but hopefully not entirely devoid of the joy and childish energy."
