If Pierrick and Gonzalo had never spoken before placing their hands on their instruments in a New York studio, one can immediately sense from listening to the record how instant their understanding was and how deep their symbiosis became. And that through their journey together in music, a sincere friendship was born. - - Titled simply Pédron Rubalcaba, the album tells the essential story: the tale of a meeting at the top. As a starting point, a fine selection by Pierrick Pédron and Daniel Yvinec of 'demanding great standards traversing the 20th century' (from Si tu vois ma mère by Sidney Bechet to the precious Lawns by Carla Bley), arranged by Laurent Courthaliac. Inspired by his knowledge of bop as well as the Nadia Boulanger school and with deep respect for Gonzalo Rubalcaba's playing, Laurent set out to 'write the most beautiful chords for the most beautiful hands.' - - The record, composed of great moments of bravery where the lines soar with evident mastery over the written scores, allows for significant breaks, touching on romantic, contemporary, and sometimes even noise music. In this art of the duo, Pierrick and Gonzalo challenge each other, provoke each other, gauge each other, enjoy surprising one another, and seek to surpass each other. Two musicians who dare everything and for whom everything seems to come so easily venture together into the music that lies behind the notes. One is swept away by the mastery of the piano's resonances, the breaths enveloping the notes, the sounds of the saxophone keys, Gonzalo's impromptu singing...
