Picidae is a stripped-down duo of jazz, mystical folk, and atmospheric indie pop that delivers magical, understated sounds. The duo consists of Sigrun Tara Overland on vocals, lyre, autoharp, and guitars, and Eirik Dorsdal on trumpet, electronics, kalimba, and vocals. Picidae's distinctive character lies in its particular sound combinations: the lyre, an original instrument, and other string instruments are combined with a trumpet that is unexpectedly deconstructed and reassembled, as well as with synths and other electronic devices. Picidae works in a musical style that draws inspiration from both jazz and singer-songwriters, but the music also features elements of pop and folk/world. Picidae has performed concerts in Norway, Sweden, and Italy in often unique venues such as mausoleums, old factories, and bunkers, as well as galleries, churches, festivals, and clubs. The duo has also completed four tours in Japan.
On their second album, "A Stray Labyrinth," they truly embraced their oriental inspirations. Picidae has always been a stripped-down duo, but on this album, they enlisted a special guest "star" musician: Jo Berger Myhre, who was given complete artistic freedom in adding a double bass to some of the songs. Most artists may dream of performing with a symphony orchestra, and on this album, Picidae finally had their turn! Eirik Dorsdal created an absolutely magnificent arrangement of the title track "A Stray Labyrinth," and on this album, this song was performed by the duo and the world's northernmost symphony orchestra: The Arctic Philharmonic.
