Campra, the missing link between Lully and Rameau? It is a somewhat simplistic view that long kept the Aix-born composer at a distance from the “great names of French music,” as if his (official!) status as timekeeper at the Académie Royale de Musique could make people forget the masterpieces he composed throughout his life, whether in Toulon, Arles, Toulouse or Versailles. It seems that his Requiem Mass dates from the time when he held the post of music master at Notre-Dame de Paris. The recording made of it by Philippe Herreweghe in 1987 is now one of the great discographic classics of French Baroque music.
