On the verge of being hired by COLTRANE, while at the time dreaming of joining SUN RA's brass section, SANDERS recorded his first album as a leader on September 10, 1964, marked by hard-bop (pianist JANE GETZ previously played with MINGUS). Not for a moment hesitant or rough, *Pharoah Sanders Quintet*, later retitled *Pharoah's First*, is indeed FERRELL SANDERS' very first album and the genesis of a tenor master, as the upcoming Impulse albums would confirm. Released with three different covers over the years, ESP restores the most beautiful one for this new re-release, namely the drawing from the second. New liner notes by RAS MOSHE BURNETT, accompanying saxophonist for AMINA BARAKA.
