Remastered reissue: Peter Gabriel 1 is the first self-titled solo album by Peter Gabriel released in 1977 on Charisma. The first four studio recordings by Gabriel are homonymous, so this album is commonly referred to as Car, in reference to the cover, a black and white photo of the artist asleep in a blue-tinted car. Peter Gabriel had just left Genesis after the The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway tour (he had decided to leave Genesis before the tour, but participated until the end) due to tensions within the band when he recorded his first solo album, released on his record label Charisma Records, which was already the label for the band Genesis. It is produced by Bob Ezrin, who has notably produced albums for Alice Cooper, Dr. John, and also Lou Reed (the famous Berlin). It contains one of the singer's first solo hits, Solsbury Hill. This is an autobiographical song related to his state of mind at the time of his departure from Genesis. It reached number 7 on the UK charts and was certified gold.
