PERFUME GENIUS After charming critics and audiences with his first two albums, Learning (2010), then Put Your Back N2 It (2012) — two albums that had revealed to us a Perfume Genius who was sensitive, battered by life, and songs as delicate as the piano melodies that accompanied them — Mike Hadreas has clearly moved up a level. For his new album, Too Bright, Perfume Genius enlisted Adrian Utley, guitarist of Portishead, developing a production richer than ever, made up of electronic textures, hazy backing vocals, and a whole musical setup that could almost push Mike Hadreas toward the experimental side. He has not abandoned the piano, however, the instrument with which he alone knows how to move us so well. Behind this album lies “a latent rage that has slowly developed since [his] 10 years old and is only now beginning to surface.” An album of great maturity, clearly.
