Estoile Naiant

Description

This LP represents a key turning point in patten's catalog, connecting the dots between the self-produced instrumental CDRs that delicately interlock, and the highly textured, beat-driven compositions on the surprise EP from late 2013, EOLIAN INSTATE. This new album sees him emerge from the shadows and will imminently establish him as a British producer with widespread influence. Where rare forces such as Martin Hannett, Rammelzee, Kevin Shields, Arthur Russell, Tricky, Kim Gordon, Leigh Bowery, Frank Black, Michael Clark, Grace Jones, and Steve Reich have blended and fused an immersion in the avant-garde with an affinity for the common language of radio, clubs, boomboxes, and walkmans, patten speaks a musical language that makes these distinctions totally permeable again. The clarity of his approach and his distinctive melodic and rhythmic sensibility reveal a psychedelic-tinged pop characteristic shining through these unique and forward-thinking productions. Regular collaborations with visual artist Jane Eastlight also express this generous, watchful approach that alters our perception of things – album artwork, videos, and even clothing, developing and extending the characteristics of the music to all branches of contemporary culture. ESTOILE NAIANT is a wide-ranging work. Equally influenced by the labyrinthine short stories of Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges, late nights at early FWD events, the free tunings of Sonic Youth's guitars, or the latest research in cognitive science, patten's world has no boundaries or genre; instead, it is a lysergic exploration of what it means to be a living, breathing human, here, now, today.
