It is within a new aesthetic that Avenue Wagram fits: French house jazz music / nu jazz — a modern aesthetic that aims to be the heir to the famous Tourist by St-Germain, released in 2001, and Future Shock, the mythical album by Herbie Hancock released in 1983. Two landmarks that marked the meeting of jazz with electronic music, and which Thierry Maillard extends today with his vision and sensitivity in a decidedly cinematic dimension. Like its illustrious references, Avenue Wagram offers deliberately accessible music, with simple riffs and groovy rhythms. And, like techno and electro, it is full of electronic and organic sounds. But while the whole invites dance and trance, it also leaves plenty of room for improvisation, with piano and synthesizer choruses, sometimes fiery, sometimes dreamy.
