Ivan Fedele (1953) is an Italian composer of contemporary music. This double album includes all of his compositions for solo piano performed by Pascale Berthelot, a pianist very committed to contemporary musical creation. These pieces were written between 1983, for the Toccata, and 2008 for Nachtmusik. The very titles of some of the works - Etudes Boréales and Etudes Australes - suggest real spaces and their writing communicates a "glacial, bright, and grazing luminosity" in the Etudes Boréales and "warmer although the angle of incidence is always very grazing" in the Etudes Australes. These spatial pieces are complemented by a Toccata, nine Cadenze, and a piece titled Nachtmusik. Cadenze VIII addresses the concern of the Cuicatl collection which aims to include technically accessible works and therefore likely to be played by a large number of musicians, particularly students of Conservatories.
