Four albums, one EP, solo projects, and multiple collaborations: the four Texans-turned-New Yorkers have come a long way since their first album in 2013. The river continues to flow with *Wide Awake!*, an innovative fifth album, synonymous with freshness, the conquering of new creative territories, and a testament to the group's constantly bubbling spirit. Brian Burton, aka Danger Mouse's, production work played no small part in this. It is clear that this astonishing alchemy has worked wonders.
The thirteen tracks on this new album are deeply infused with the punk rock passion we know them for, but also introduce new sounds. The record reflects a burgeoning confidence in the band's ability to explore new ideas and, above all, new emotions that its members previously dared not express. Contradictory feelings, such as joy and rage, anger and stupidity, and a desire to play on the dialectical relationship between rage and jubilation.
But above all, like bands such as Youth of Today, Gorilla Biscuits, or Black Flag, there is a furious desire to make people dance, to arm bodies for resistance with grooves, joy, and indignation in the face of nihilism and the ever-stronger rejection of culture, by chanting ideas of love, passion, and struggle against an America that is closing in and individualistic values too often elevated to total value. This is probably the quartet's most accomplished and committed album. The wake-up call has sounded!
