Just a few months after making waves with the release of his first album "Tomorrow is the Question," in which the saxophonist laid the foundations of a truly revolutionary language in his way of breaking free from all harmonic constraints, Ornette Coleman left Contemporary to record "The Shape Of Jazz To Come" on Atlantic — the first in a series of records for the label that would radically change the course of jazz history in just two years. Leading his new band, a piano-less quartet featuring the loyal Don Cherry on trumpet, as well as, for the first time recorded together, Charlie Haden on bass and Billy Higgins on drums (one of the most inventive and complementary rhythm sections of what would soon be known as "free jazz"), Ornette Coleman delivers some astonishingly lyrical and childlike improvisations with his legendary white plastic alto saxophone. Even though today, this music, in its respect for the dialogical form of bebop and its constant concern for pulse, clearly shows its place within jazz and its history, its extraordinary freshness of invention and the radical freedom of its expression remain miraculously intact.
