Ornette Coleman's first album in 1958 was called Something Else!!!, "something else!!!". And the second the following year The Shape of Jazz to Come – "the shape of jazz to come". Just that. By sticking only to the titles, one might have thought the saxophonist a bit pretentious. While he was honestly visionary. From the opening – a tense "Lonely Woman" – this album propels jazz into its free future. Everything is new and surprising here: the pressed rhythm of Charlie Haden on double bass and Billy Higgins on drums, who sometimes seem to move blindly, groping and bumping into each other. The interplay of Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry on cornet, intoxicated with novelty and freedom. Far from being a difficult album to access, The Shape of Jazz to Come exudes a joy and an (apparent) simplicity, almost childlike.
