Jazz is a multifaceted style, and this album is not the easiest to access. It is the result of a session between saxophonist Ornette Coleman and his seven accomplices, divided into two units: Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, Scott LaFaro on double bass and Ed Blackwell on drums on the left channel, Eric Dolphy on bass clarinet, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Charlie Haden on double bass and Ed Blackwell on drums on the right channel. These 37 furious minutes form the foundation of this "Free Jazz" that gives its title to the album. Everything here is spontaneous, even the length of the work, which was not determined at the time the tape recorders started rolling. Note to the discerning listener: this free trip is a major record that invented a new sub-genre of jazz, but it is reserved for those who will make the effort to understand and appreciate it.
