Orcutt Shelley Miller and the legendary singer David Yow of The Jesus Lizard join forces for a wild take on Captain Beefheart’s “Hot Head,” with Neil Young’s “A Man Needs A Maid” on the B-side. This track, performed by Orcutt Shelley Miller, will be released as a digital EP on April 7 and as a 7-inch vinyl on May 29 via Silver Current Records. Following their critically acclaimed self-titled debut album, released in 2025, Orcutt Shelley Miller returns with a 7-inch EP featuring two unexpected covers and a perfectly suited vocal contribution from David Yow on Beefheart’s “Hot Head.” Ethan Miller, known for his vocal performances in bands such as Howlin Rain and Comets On Fire, delivers an intimate and deeply fragile vocal performance on OSM’s cinematic version of Neil Young’s “A Man Needs A Maid.” Speaking about the origins of “Hot Head,” OSM bassist Ethan Miller explains: “Beefheart is unquestionably one of our main points of convergence, as Bill would say, for OSM. Bill was playing the riff from ‘Hot Head’ and weaving it into the heart of one of our songs at a similar tempo on some nights of the tour.” Miller continues: “We kept exploring it, over and over, until it became a song in its own right, folded into another song! David Yow and Steve were old friends, and David seemed like the perfect person to finish the track and handle the vocals. David is one of the pillars helping to carry on Beefheart’s musical legacy, within and beyond 90s and 2000s alternative music. To me, that explosive mix of sonic complexity and visceral, primal expression is at the heart of the power of David and The Jesus Lizard, as it is for Orcutt Shelley Miller. Beefheart carved in stone the blueprint for that musical dynamic.” Speaking about Beefheart, David Yow says: “I am extremely grateful to Don Van Vliet and his work, both visual and musical, but no more than to OSM. That may be true, may not be.” The B-side cover of Neil Young’s “A Man Needs A Maid” came about from a request from Uncut magazine: OSM was supposed to quickly record a Neil Young cover for a compilation. Ethan then asked Bill, by text, which song he thought was appropriate. Bill replied: “A Man Needs A Maid.” Later, Bill admitted to the band that he was joking, but since Ethan had not picked up on the tone of the conversation, he quickly sent him basic acoustic guitar, vocal, and string tracks. Bill and Steve then added their electric guitars and percussion to finish the track.
