Description

Thus was born L'Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp; a mischievous title paying homage to traditional African groups - Orchestre Tout Puissant Konono n°1, Orchestre Tout Puissant Polyrytmo, etc. - and to one of the greatest disruptors of 20th-century art. A medusa-like raft drifting willingly, disregarding compasses and military maps, OTPMD embodies the possibility of a broad and generous music, caring as little for borders as for identity papers, aggregating around the same principle of pleasure multiple traditional heritages, the forces of free disorder, the pulverized alphabet of rock n' roll, the science of contemporary music, the audacity of punk, the multifaceted memory of popular music, and the speculative fantasies of learned music. The third album (Rotorotor) of the Orchestra, produced by John Parish (P.J Harvey, Eels, Giant Sand, Dominique A...) was recorded by Ali Chant at Toybox Studio in Bristol. It is a more "concerted" album, perhaps more pop in that it is more focused than ever on the songs themselves. What strikes immediately is how Parish has managed to give sharper and more defined contours to contain the usual maelstrom of the Orchestra. What we hear here is a group with a purified syncretism, with clear and angular lines within which a frantic slider constantly moves from one intensity to another, the imagination always in motion. Rotorotor is a manifesto of free and adventurous music, organized into versatile popsongs, playful and fervent, incandescent, funny and impassioned, embracing without pretension a kind of fragmented futuristic traditionalism, multiple shimmering identities, an art combined of celebration and war, wedding dances and battle songs thrown together on the battered floor.
