Last Days On Earth is the debut album by the German post-punk band Onyon, released on Trouble In Mind. Onyon's strange, synth-drenched world is disconcerting at first – the band's stuttering rhythms may remind listeners of groups like Devo, Kleenex/Liliput, or LITHICS, but the synth doodles that populate and punctuate the band's songs make it unique. The band flirts with the primitive cool of 80s minimal synth and the garage idiocy of the 60s. The bursts of jagged, ragged guitars rage unpretentiously, never afraid to take the lead over rubbery bass lines and stuttering drum patterns that ebb and flow imperceptibly. Sung in both English and German, the true magic of the record occurs when the two voices – one deadpan, the other slightly unhinged – merge to create vague yet palpable harmonies.
