"Off the Grid" is a journey that connects the origin story of African dance rhythms to the electronic dance music of today's clubs and festivals, linking African folklore and storytelling to rap, jazz, and hip-hop.
From Kinshasa to Kendrick, from Accra market tapes to London pirate radio, from Malian blues to UK jazz. This isn't a new fusion, but a celebration of the family tree of music rooted in the diaspora. While it may not be a sound many people have heard, it's a sound that connects us all to our history, connecting the dots in popular music and the importance of preserving the lessons of our ancestors.
Onipa's two creators - Tom Excell (Nubiyan Twist) and Kweku Sackey (K.O.G. & the Zongo Brigade) - along with Finn Booth on drums and Dwayne Kilvington (aka Wonky Logic) on synthesizers, have built a truly original and vibrant sonic universe.
"Off The Grid" is the band's second full-length album, and their first release on Peter Gabriel's Real World Records, featuring an impressive array of collaborators including Moonchild Sanelly, David Walters, Dele Sosimi, and Theon Cross.
