The music of the 17th album by the New York band Oneida, Expensive Air, began with melodic rock songs featuring tight structures—very much in line with the hits from their previous album, Success (2022)—but along the way, things changed. Oneida has long straddled the gray boundaries between the punk/psyche/rock world of New York and the art/experimental realm. Success was released after a four-year hiatus, unleashing the band's creative energy into a collection of catchy, accessible, and almost pop songs. The structure of the songs remained important in the preparation of Expensive Air, as did the instinctive and improvised interaction that has always been part of Oneida's process. The new album expands on what Oneida achieved with Success, but also surpasses it, establishing irresistible song structures and exploding them into small psychedelic fragments.
