Pianist Olga Pashchenko creates musical narratives from selected Songs Without Words by Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn. Child prodigies both, the brother and sister liked to use a text as a source of inspiration in their piano pieces, although it is not known which of the two really invented the genre. It is possible that they conceived it together, or even that Fanny may be the creator of this genre that tradition attributes exclusively to Felix. This music, though without words, is full of poetry and suits the 1836 Conrad Graf piano that Pashchenko chose for this recording very well. The character of the Graf piano – a maker Felix was fond of – is close to recitative, and Pashchenko uses it to perfectly articulate the inherent poetry of these Lieder ohne Worte, which Fanny called Lieder für das Pianoforte.Buy Guess Who?
