Away was written during a troubled period in the life of the leader of OKKERVIL RIVER, a personal and professional rough patch that was compounded by the death of his grandfather. After composing a collection of nine superb tracks, Sheff gathered a brand-new lineup around the name OKKERVIL RIVER. On this album, there are New York jazz musicians and friends of the band such as Marissa Nadler or Jonathan Meiburg (Shearwater). Will Sheff also called on composer Nathan Thatcher to write the string arrangements that run through his album, on the yMusic orchestra to record them, and on Jonathan Wilson to mix the album. Moving between folk and indie rock, infused with soul and country, Away is, according to Sheff, the most natural album he has recorded, but also his favorite OKKERVIL RIVER album.
