Born Jun Seba, Nujabes is one of the most internationally recognized Japanese artists and has a devoted fan community. He was the producer of two labels, T Records and Guiness Records, as well as a production company called Hyde-Out Productions, an independent label that allowed him to release his two cult albums: Metaphorical Music (2003) and Modal Soul (2005). Nujabes' music is influenced by cool jazz and blends jazz with abstract hip hop. He tragically passed away in 2010 due to a car accident in Tokyo. Two years after his first album, Nujabes returned with Modal Soul, an album that marked the history of hip hop. Nujabes stated, "I started making tracks because I wanted to hear music that sampled the old soul and jazz that I loved." In Modal Soul, hip hop intertwines with ultra-modern jazz, always featuring those Japanese sounds that take us right into the heart of Tokyo's parks, wide avenues, and hidden alleys.
