Since the release of her first EP in 2017, Nubya Garcia has continuously pushed the stylistic boundaries of jazz. Four years after Source, a debut album tinged with R&B, ambient, and reggae-dub influences, the London-based saxophonist, composer, and producer takes a new creative step with "Odyssey". Propelled by the cinematic string arrangements of the Chineke! Orchestra, an ensemble bringing together musicians from diverse ethnic backgrounds, her 12 tracks offer a spectacular symphonic opening, coupled with a tribute to the often-overlooked Black female figures of experimental jazz. In "Odyssey", Nubya Garcia salutes her adventurous pioneers, including Jeanne Lee, Linda Sharrock, and June Tyson, by summoning their contemporary heirs Georgia Anne Muldrow, Richie Seivwright, and Esperanza Spalding. Their vocal contributions are part of this "Odyssey", entirely composed, arranged, and orchestrated by Nubya Garcia, a vibrant declaration of artistic emancipation blending nostalgia, classicism, and the avant-garde.
