Description

Produced and recorded in several locations (New York, Dakar, Nouakchott), the album Tzenni is a contemporary expression of Mauritanian griot music, an art form that has evolved and grown over the past centuries. This is reflected in the music of Noura Mint Seymali, an artist deeply rooted in her history. Noura Mint Seymali comes from a long line of musicians. Her father, Seymali Ould Ahmed Vall, helped open Mauritanian music to the world by developing the first notation system for Moorish music, adapting the national anthem, and composing pieces popularized by his wife (and Noura’s stepmother) Dimi Mint Abba. After singing as a backing vocalist for Dimi Mint Abba, Noura Mint Seymali now carries forward the legacy of the Seymali, Dimi, her grandmother Mounina, and countless others.
