Released after the triumph of Nevermind, to give the trio some time to compose, this odds-and-ends compilation alternates between the best and the lesser. While "Downer" or "Aero Zeppelin" are only of historical interest, recalling that Nirvana in its early days was merely a punk gang with no particular originality, "Sliver", "Been A Son" or "Aneurysm", on the contrary, rank among Kurt Cobain's most catchy compositions, and could have fittingly appeared on Nevermind or In Utero. It is also a pleasure to hear the band cover Devo ("Turnaround") or their beloved Vaselines ("Molly's Lips", "Son Of A Gun"), who would be honored again on the Unplugged album. An essential document for fans.
