BLACK GOLD/180g Audiophile Black Vinyl

Description

In 1969, the high priestess of soul, Nina Simone, took to the stage at New York’s Philharmonic Hall to record her new album, ‘Black Gold’. It became a legendary performance with the first recording of the civil rights song “To Be Young, Gifted And Black” (“To Be Young, Gifted And Black”), a song that “is not primarily intended for white people. Although it doesn’t put you down in any way ... it simply ignores you. Because my people need all the inspiration and love they can get.” ‘Black Gold’ also contains a rendition of Sandy Denny’s “Who Knows Where The Time Goes” in a minimalist arrangement that results in an uplifting orchestration, faithful to both the writer and the performer. Throughout the performance, Ms. Simone maintains a regal, detached and at times awkward composure, her monologues between songs bringing the listener a little closer to her deeply moving performance. Her eclectic style introduces us to different forms of music; Soul and Gospel and Folk past, Jazz and Broadway; her distinctive and androgynous timbre shifts between melancholy and happiness, and yet we always feel that Ms. Simone is taking us exactly where she wants us to go. Overall, ‘Black Gold’ is a moving and touching album from the peak of her performance and recording period not to be overlooked. Available for the 50th anniversary, in a limited edition of 1500 individually numbered copies on black and gold marbled vinyl.
