At the Village Gate followed the enormous success of Nina Simone's first live album, which she recorded at Town Hall in New York on September 12, 1959. That same year, she signed a contract with the New York label Colpix Records. She recorded her second album for them, The Amazing Nina Simone, which included the original studio version of "Children Go Where I Send You," also performed at the Village Gate. The two bonus tracks that follow the eight from the original album are considered to come from the same concert at the Village Gate: the Israeli song "Vaynikehu" and "Sinnerman."
