At Newport - Forbidden Fruit

This 2LP box set brings you the LP "Forbidden Fruit" and the LP "At Newport" by Nina Simone. "Gin House Blues" is later re-recorded in a more optimistic way. "Work Song," written by Oscar Brown, Jr. and Nat Adderley, tells the story of a chain gang. The title track "Forbidden Fruit" is a humorous and rhythmic take on Adam and Eve, both a nursery rhyme and a call-and-response. Nina is supported by Al Shackman (piano), Chris White (guitar), and Bobby Hamilton (bass) during both performances. "At Newport" is another excellent live show by Nina, starting with blues and a stunning rendition of "Porgy." She then uses her prominent spot at the Newport Jazz Festival to showcase her diversity, ranging from folk, rhythmic jams, and an instrumental version of "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" that almost resembles a classical recital.
