Recording once again with Steve Albini at Electrical Audio studio in Chicago, Nina Nastasia enlisted Los Angeles-based instrumentalist and arranger Paul Bryan to adapt her songs into scores for a small orchestra. With drummer Jay Bellerose and Chicago-based guitarist Jeff Parker, Outlaster benefits from an absolutely exceptional lineup. This album is a work of lush sophistication that, without losing any of its singularity or restraint, transcends Nastasia's characteristic simplicity. The orchestra adopts a more formal approach, elevated by Bryan's powerful and moving score (reminiscent of composers like Gil Evans and the late Phil Ochs), which magnifies the album with brilliant brass and reeds and a dynamic string ensemble. After more than ten years of absence, Outlaster is finally back on vinyl. Remastered for vinyl by Josh Bonati in 2025, this reissue of Outlaster is pressed on limited edition burgundy vinyl.
