Nils Landgren is undoubtedly one of the busiest jazz musicians on the planet. Musical director of several big bands, artistic director of numerous festivals, producer, singer, and eminent trombonist, member of the famous Jazz Crusaders: could the Swede be the jazz equivalent of another workaholic, Valery Gergiev? This appetite and this myriad of projects should not overshadow all the attention and care given to each new recording. Thus, this album is certainly one of the most accomplished by the musician; the production took many months, the necessary time to bring together the musicians with whom Nils wished to collaborate for a long time. One of the central themes of the album is "the moon," a star subject to many jazz and pop classics, some of which are reinterpreted here by Nils: "Moon River" by Mancini, "Stars In Your Eyes" by Hancock, "Moonshadow" by Cat Stevens, etc. The Swede pulled out his address book and surrounded himself with the best talents from ACT as well as partners whose reputation is well established: Joe Sample, Steve Gadd, Richard Galliano, Michael Wollny, Ida Sand, Vince Mendoza, Joao Bosco, etc. Dedicated to the memory of his friend Esbjörn Svensson, this album highlights ballads, even if a few funky developments wisely enrich the album.
