Description

Mainly composed during the six years following the release of What Have You Done, My Brother?, a period during which Naomi Shelton and The Gospel Queens toured intensely, Cold World was recorded in June 2013 with Gabriel Roth (Bosco Mann). Driven by Naomi's raw and powerful voice, the 12 tracks of Cold World navigate between gospel and soul with an unmatched groove, reminiscent of the most inspired moments of the Staple Singers or Curtis Mayfield. The backing band, whose members' ages range from 17 to 82, is led by Brother Cliff Driver, who has notably worked with Baby Washington, Little Willie John, King Curtis, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, and Solomon Burke. On bass is Fred Thomas, who spent most of his career alongside the godfather of soul, James Brown. Jimmy Hill, who was seen alongside Wilson Pickett in the late 60s, plays organ on the album, while the very young Max Shrager plays guitar and contributes two tracks. On drums is Mikey Post, also an employee of Daptone Records.
