"Rovanio," by Brazilian singer, percussionist, and guitarist Nanny Assis, is a true kaleidoscope of styles, textures, ideas, and even languages, all while staying true to the Brazilian roots that are the essence of his music.
No fewer than 20 artists contribute to the ten tracks on Rovanio. Among them are legendary bassist Ron Carter, guitarist Chico Pinheiro, trumpeter Randy Brecker, pianist Fred Hersch, saxophonists John Ellis, Igor Butman, and Lakecia Benjamin, as well as singers Janis Siegel, Vinicius Cantuária, and Emanuel Yerday.
In 2020, Nanny Assis celebrated 40 years in music. Recognized as a bossa/jazz singer, percussionist, and guitarist, the artist from Bahia – now based between New York and South Florida – aimed for something grander:
"Coming from Brazil gave me a multitude of musical styles and roots. It's an incredible richness – I wanted to create an album that reflects my true universe."
He summarizes his project: "This album could be called 'The Music of Nanny Assis and His Friends'." Aside from an essential standard, "Manhã de Carnaval," every track is the result of a collaboration, whether for the lyrics or the music. Additionally, Assis and Chico Pinheiro co-arranged almost all of the pieces.
