The first time Nat Hentoff, founder of Candid, heard Harrow sing, he immediately decided that if he ever started his own label, he would have to record an album with her. Both of his dreams came true, giving birth to a vocal jazz album as captivating as anything you can hear. Despite its accessibility, it also showcases Harrow's unique style. She is one of the few singers of her generation who did not imitate the voices of the icons who came before her.
When the Washington Post reviewed this album, it hit the mark on several points regarding 'Wild Women Don't Have the Blues' and Nancy Harrow herself: "She sings for pleasure, not to be glamorous, nor to criticize our musicians, but simply because she has a feeling she wants to convey. Repeated listenings confirm this: her long, strong phrases, the ironic power of her discreet emotions, the stripped-down, supple timbre of her voice, straight as a clipper's keel. And I say we have something rare here: a woman who has made what is common to us all magnificent. I think that's what they call art."
After this album, Harrow took a 12-year break to raise her children (including Damon Krukowski of Galaxie 500) before reappearing on the jazz scene, even more acclaimed. This reissue finally gives her debut the chance it has always deserved to find its place in the collections of aficionados and casual listeners alike.
