Dunya, the title of Mustafa's debut album, masterfully crafted and breathtakingly tender, translates approximately in Arabic to "the world with all its flaws." It is a noble subject for a young songwriter, but like all the themes at the heart of the work of the Canadian artist of Sudanese origin - from religious devotion to childhood trauma, from gang violence to romantic intimacy - he approaches it through a personal lens. Blending genres and atmospheres, weaving romantic details into instantly memorable folk songs, he has created an album that feels like a series of personal revelations, arriving one after the other. With a muted voice capable of silencing his surroundings, Mustafa quickly transitioned from a prodigy reciting poems in his hometown of Toronto to a songwriter behind major pop hits. On Dunya, he becomes a fully-fledged author.
