Celebrating its 20th anniversary, First Word Records continues its impressive series of releases by unveiling its brand new compilation album "Love & Purpose." Crafted with love by the label's founder Aly Giliani (AKA Gilla), the album is a celebration of British soul music, both past and present. Inspired by the vinyl compilations that shaped his early years as a DJ, Gilla has created a collection of 12 tracks that tell the story of underground British soul music over the last 40 years, incorporating street soul, alternative R&B, neo-soul, and more. The first disc (Love) focuses on artists active before 2000, while the second disc (Purpose) highlights new artists who carry the torch of the previous generation. Thus, Carl McIntosh's produced "Feel" by Ruth Joy sits alongside the retro street-soul sounds of Lynda Dawn, and the modern love rock classic "Hard Work" by Children Of Zeus is paired with Omar's enduring "Ghana Emotion." Featuring music from artists in Manchester, London, Leeds, Cardiff, and Sheffield, "Love & Purpose" is the soundtrack of summers from 1985 to the present day.
