In 2023, the apocalypse seems even more ridiculous than anyone could have predicted… Fortunately, the absurdities of modern life have always been a prime subject for the Seattle-based band Mudhoney. On Plastic Eternity, their 11th studio album, the four band members tackle all these absurdities with sharp humor and muddy riffs. Mudhoney remains the quintessential underground band, with its brutal and primal punk and its funny, biting lyrics, a combination that has remained powerful since the band's formation in the late 1980s. Whether it's a track addressing climate change from the perspective of the climate, an upbeat rock'n'roll song about taking medication meant for animals, or a punk attack on the treatment of humans like cattle, Plastic Eternity is an exhilarating journey through all the proto-genres of guitar rock, with a keen eye on the absurdities of the 2020s world. The recording of Plastic Eternity brought some constraints for the band, including tight deadlines, with only nine days at the Crackle & Pop! studio in Seattle with their longtime producer Johnny Sangster. Unusually for Mudhoney, Plastic Eternity contains two genuine love songs. The first is for Tom Herman, one of singer Arm's favorite guitarists and the protagonist of "Tom Herman's Hermits." Finally, there’s the closing track "Little Dogs," an anthem to the simple joys of spending time with your dog, reflecting on the gratitude felt towards a friend in tough times. It seems that despite its biting discourse, Plastic Eternity is not just a retort to the constant attacks on our intelligence and our planet, but also an ode to the connections we forge with other living beings.
