What an astonishing journey for Mortimer Shuman, son of Polish Jewish immigrants in the United States, who managed to be appreciated wherever he went! After providing some major standards to American rock, notably for the Drifters and Presley, in collaboration with Doc Pomus, he emigrated to France where he teamed up with Etienne Roda-Gil. From this collaboration, some splendid tracks were born, including the mega-hit "Le lac majeur." The snowflakes falling on it do not suggest it would become a summer hit, but "Un été de porcelaine" and others like "Sorrow" have everything it takes, responding to the battle cry: "A nous les petites Anglaises." But where has that sacred "Papa, tango, charlie" gone?
