First studio album by the band since 2000! Hailing from Boston, Morphine is a cult 1990s trio led by Mark Sandman, who developed a unique style dubbed “low rock.” Their music was built around Sandman’s voice and two-string bass, Dana Colley’s baritone and tenor saxophones, and stripped-down drumming, notably by Jerome Deupree and Billy Conway. The band made its mark on the alternative scene before Sandman’s sudden death on stage in Italy in 1999, abruptly bringing their journey to an end. More than 25 years later, Cocoon is a true new album rather than just a compilation of demos or unreleased tracks. The eight tracks come from late-1990s sessions, recorded before being set aside by Sandman as Morphine was preparing what would become its final album. Found in the band’s archives, the original tapes were restored and produced by Paul Q. Kolderie (Radiohead, Pixies), while Dana Colley added new saxophone parts. With its new versions and mixes, Cocoon reveals a Morphine still evolving, nearly three decades after these tracks were recorded.
