Dear Life Records is proud to present the physical reissue of MJ Lenderman’s self-titled debut album. MJ Lenderman is a songwriter born and raised in Asheville, North Carolina. The anatomy of an MJ record might look like this: warped pedal steel and saturated guitars; a vocal delivery reminiscent of a choir boy’s high lonesome wail; a philosopher’s observations and ruminations from the front porch. Songs shift from lo-fi home recording to something shinier, but the recording venue doesn’t seem to matter much—at its core, a Lenderman song rings true. Now available as a double LP and remastered for vinyl, it offers a glimpse into the formative stages of a style, focused and precise, yet also expansive and rough around the edges, that remains consistent throughout MJ’s catalog to this day. Referring as firmly to the legacy of 90s slowcore as to the tenor of Magnolia Electric Co. and the wall of sound of Neil Young and Crazy Horse, these 9 songs last a little over an hour and offer warm, patient worlds of color that pass lightly.
