The iconic anti-apartheid singer began her career in 1960 with this seminal album, where she was accompanied by guitarist Perry Lopez and the Belafonte Folk Singers choir. Between traditional songs ("House Of The Rising Sun," long before The Animals, "Mtube" which is "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"), and vocal flights in Xhosa, Johannesburg's vernacular language, the woman who would be nicknamed Mama Africa laid the foundations of her powerful and evocative vocal style here.
