A prodigious fiction co-written, performed, and directed by Don Cheadle (“Out of Sight,” “Traffic,” “Rwanda,” “Ocean's Eleven,” etc.) “Miles Ahead” is a dizzying and moving exploration - where reality and fiction intertwine - of the life of Miles Davis. In 1975, in the midst of a dazzling prolific career, Miles Davis, always at the forefront of innovation in the world of modern jazz, suddenly disappears from public life for five years. Alone and reclusive at home, he must face the pain caused by his damaged hip, his voice stifled and numbed by medication, as well as the demons of his past. The film is built on the parallel between Miles in 1978 during his period of silence, these five years during which he neither played nor recorded, and the 10 years he lived with Frances Taylor Davis, at the time the love of his life and his muse. The film's original soundtrack, which admirably follows the structure of the film, allows us to rediscover some masterpieces performed by Miles himself and taken from albums (released between 1956 and 1981): “Blue Haze,” “Kind Of Blue,” “Sketches Of Spain,” “Seven Steps To Heaven,” “Nefertiti,” “Filles de Kilimanjaro,” “Directions,” “Big Fun,” “On The Corner,” “Agartha,” and “The Man With The Horn.” It is Robert Glasper (the most prominent jazz pianist and composer today) who has admirably provided the additional music, with, on one of the tracks, the participation of Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Esperanza Spaulding.
