The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper is a double album recorded at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. The album is a sequel to the studio album Super Session, which featured both Bloomfield and Kooper along with Stephen Stills and had achieved commercial and critical success earlier in 1968. Regarding the performances, recordings, and production, Kooper describes in the liner notes the difficulties in finding a rehearsal space, Bloomfield's insomnia, and a vocal microphone failure during "Dear Mr. Fantasy." The album is an important, albeit raw, document of a live blues-rock performance of the time and is notable not only for being one of the first live recordings of Carlos Santana but also for Bloomfield's debut as a singer. Although he is not historically known in this role, in "Don't Throw Your Love on Me So Strong," according to Kooper, "he pays tribute to the traditional guitar-vocal compromises; a lesson in phrasing and understanding."
